Kawai CA97 37” Concert Artist ‘Hybrid’ Digital Upright Piano

The Kawai CA97 37” Concert Artist ‘Hybrid’ Digital Upright Piano will transform enthusiastic players into accomplished pianists, and modest rooms into grand concert halls. This is the ambitious philosophy behind the CA97 Concert Artist digital piano – a premium instrument that captures the essence of playing a magnificent concert grand piano, and inspires musicians to realize their true artistic potential.

Kawai has been crafting musical instruments for over 90 years, maintaining traditional processes while embracing unique, original ideas. These decades of experience afford our engineers a wealth of knowledge from which to create stunning digital instruments, in a quest to perfect the art of the piano.

To achieve this ambition, every aspect of the latest CA97 Concert Artist Upright has been developed to ensure that this flagship instrument provides the most authentic playing experience of any digital piano.

Sitting down at the new CA97 Concert Artist Upright, the first thing that strikes the player is the instrument’s flat fascia and tall upper board, giving the impression of a grand piano and immediately elevating the musical aspirations of the performer.

The CA97’s new Grand Feel II keyboard action reinforces Kawai’s reputation as an industry leader, utilizing real wooden keys with luxurious Ivory & Ebony Touch surfaces, and incorporating premium features such as let-off simulation and triple-sensor key detection. This class-leading keyboard action is bolstered by powerful digital audio technologies that faithfully reproduce the exquisite sound of Kawai’s magnificent Shigeru Kawai SK-EXL concert grand piano.

With the latest Harmonic Imaging XL sound sampling, remarkable 256 note polyphony, and stunning reverberation and resonance modelling effects, the new Concert Artist delivers unparalleled acoustic realism that is guaranteed to enthrall performers and audience members alike.

Yet despite the abundance of powerful technology on the inside, the CA97 Concert Artist Upright still delivers a remarkably traditional piano playing experience. This is thanks to the instrument’s understated cheekblock control panel and handsome cabinet design, with a selection of distinctive grand piano-like characteristics that celebrate Kawai’s rich, classical pedigree.

And there is no finer way to demonstrate this harmonious marriage of ground-breaking modern technology and long-established traditional approaches than Kawai’s unique Soundboard Speaker System. This triumph of audio design channels the Concert Artist’s high fidelity digital sound onto a genuine spruce soundboard, producing a warm, unmistakably acoustic tone that is more naturally balanced than any other digital piano.

Unrivaled grand touch, breathtaking acoustic tone, distinctive traditional design, and inspirational modern features. The CA97 Concert Artist from Kawai – the concert grand piano experience in digital form.

The Variety of a Digital Piano

Complementing the instrument’s class-leading Grand Feel II keyboard action and stunning Harmonic Imaging XL grand piano sound, the CA97 also offers a strong selection of digital features that further enhance one’s musical enjoyment.

USB audio recording and playback, Dual, Split, and Four Hands keyboard modes, and a rich assortment of customizable instrument voices add greater variety to players’ performances, while the convenient metronome function and integrated classical etudes and Alfred course books ensure that regular practice is both productive and engaging for aspiring pianists.

Appreciating Acoustic Piano Design
Standing proudly among other items of fine furniture, a piano is often considered the centerpiece of any room it occupies.

With elegant cabinetry, striking accents, and a natural wooden finish, the exterior appearance of a piano contributes more to the overall aesthetic of playing and listening to music than arguably any other instrument.

This shared belief inspires Kawai’s digital and acoustic piano designers to work together, developing original ideas that improve functionality, without detracting from an instrument’s traditional character.

Kawai CA97 Uses the Grand Feel II (GFII) Wooden-Key Action with Let-Off and Triple Sensor Detection
Embracing many of the long-established principles associated with an acoustic piano, the new Grand Feel II keyboard action utilized by the latest Concert Artist combines realistic materials, motion, and mechanism to recreate the exceptional touch of the finest concert grand pianos.

All eighty-eight black and white keys are crafted entirely from long pieces of wood, with finely textured ivory and ebony-like surfaces applied to absorb moisture and assist control. Each wooden key pivots smoothly on a balance pin – the ends rising and falling to replicate the familiar ‘seesaw’ motion of an acoustic piano action. When pressed, the back of the key lifts, triggering a grade-weighted hammer to strike a pressure switch.  The amount of force applied to this switch is then measured, and the corresponding note played with authentic tonal character and volume.

In addition, graded counterweights attached towards the front of each key help to lighten their touch during pianissimo passages, with letoff simulation also reproducing the delicate ‘notch’ sensation felt when playing the keys of a grand piano very softly.  These subtle characteristics allow discerning pianists to practice their expanding repertoire with confidence, and ensure that there are no unpleasant surprises when called upon to perform using the finest acoustic grand pianos.

Kawai CA Upright Pianos

Touch. Tone. Strength. Character. Precision. Experience.
Tradition and Innovative Spirit. The essence of CA Kawai

The celebrated tradition and technology that supports the sounds and remarkable distinctive tonal character produced by the CA Kawai are created by the craftsmen who dedicate their lives to building the world’s finest and most advanced pianos empowered with life, breadth and depth that lasts for generations.

Every single step, each intricately detailed design, is performed by our craftsmen drawing upon their years of experience to achieve their relentless pursuit of perfection. It’s this good, old-fashioned care and great individual pride that enables Kawai pianos to attract the greatest musicians from around the world.

For over 90 years, Kawai has been the architect of the modern piano boldly pioneering the use of state-of-the-art materials and ideas to advance the piano art form. Building upon decades of experience and tradition, our celebrated technology delivers extraordinary touch and tone that produces lasting enjoyment and peak performance.

Purity of Tone that Fills the Room... The Shigeru Kawai SK-EXL Concert Grand Piano is widely regarded by professional pianists and piano technicians as one of the finest instruments in the world. Hand-built over many months by Master Piano Artisans at the Shigeru Kawai Piano Research Laboratory in Ryuyo, Japan, each SK-EXL Concert Grand undergoes a through regulation and refinement process in a specially-designed anechoic chamber. Following this lengthy crafting process, the completed SK-EXL Piano receives a final series of rigorous quality inspections before eventually taking center stage in the world’s most prestigious musical institutions and concert halls.

88-Key Piano Sampling - The beautiful sound of the Shigeru Kawai SK-EXL Concert Grand Piano is at the heart of the CP Concert Performer Digital Series Sound, with all 88 keys of this world-class instrument painstakingly recorded, carefully analyzed and accurately reproduced as high-fidelity digital audio. Recording each key individually in this way (rather than stretching the same tone over several different notes) preserves the rich harmonic character of the SK-EXL Concert Grand Piano and guarantees that the sound heard when playing any of the Concert Performer’s keys is a faithful representation of the original acoustic source.

Touch Texture. Responsive Fast Action.
Beautiful Quality of ‘Singing Strings’. Brilliant Rich Harmonics and Depth.

Playing the piano is as much an experience of "touch" as it is of tone. Day after day, the musician's hands come in contact with the piano keys. The piano's responsiveness can make a critical difference that can affect the player's performance, confidence and overall playing enjoyment. Consistent, ultra-responsive touch is a Kawai tradition.

The extraordinary combination of strength and stability allows the CA piano action to transfer energy with unparalleled efficiency, power, precision and nuance for a superb playing experience, for increased tone production that will last over time better than any other piano.

A Rare Treasure… A limited number of all Kawai instruments will ever bear the name CA. The rigorous degree of work and technology keeps these instruments rare in both character and quantity. Each CA piano is a limited edition treasure numbered by year of creation.
