The Real Hammer II (RHII) Action

KAWAI The Touch of a Grand Piano: Responsive Hammer II keyboard action
The CP3’s Responsive Hammer II keyboard action recreates the supreme touch of an acoustic grand piano, with its realistic movement and rigid, springless design providing a smooth and natural piano playing experience.

The instrument’s triple-sensor key detection system enhances responsiveness and accuracy, while structural reinforcements throughout the action assembly help to minimize noise and key wobble during staccato and fortissimo passages.

Kawai CP3 Uses the Real Hammer II (RHII) Responsive Hammer Action with Let-Off and Triple Sensor Detection

The Kawai CP3 Digital Upright Pianos use the Responsive Hammer Action II (RHII) action an industry-standard design where the pivot point is placed at the back of the key, not in the middle. The CP3 Digital Series Action utilizes a hammer component under the keys that creates a mechanical movement and feels similar to an acoustic piano. Additionally, the hammer weights are “graded” where the left-hand, or bass, keys are heaviest. As you move up the keyboard the hammers gradually become lighter. This simulates the same characteristic found in an acoustic pianos action where the hammers are larger in the bass region and gradually get smaller as you move up the keyboard.

The Real Hammer - Responsive Hammer Action II (RHII) action is the latest version of Kawai’s plastic-key actions. In addition to the aforementioned features, it offers Ivory-touch key surfaces, triple sensor key detection, and Let-off.
KAWAI Responsive Hammer II keyboard action
The weight of the keyboard is appropriately graded to mirror the heavier bass hammers and lighter treble hammers of an acoustic piano, while let-off simulation recreates the subtle ‘notch’ sensation felt when softly playing the keys of a grand piano. These important characteristics allow discerning pianists to practice their expanding repertoire with confidence, and ensure that there are no unpleasant surprises when called upon to perform using the finest acoustic grand pianos.
KAWAI Triple sensor key detection
The Responsive Hammer II keyboard action utilizes an accurate triple-sensor key detection system for enhanced playing realism.

The added third sensor improves responsiveness when playing the same key repeatedly, and unlike conventional two sensor keyboard actions found in many digital pianos, allows the sound of a single note to be gradually ‘layered’ without the previous tone being lost.

In addition, Kawai’s action technology also monitors the speed at which each key is lifted, influencing the release character of piano sounds, and providing a greater range of expression between staccato and legato playing.

KAWAI Ivory Touch key surfaces
The impressive CP3 features Kawai’s highly regarded Ivory Touch key surfaces as standard.  This finely textured material gently absorbs fingertip perspiration and oils to assist playing control, and possesses a natural, matte finish that is smooth but not slippery.

Furthermore, this moisture is absorbed without dirt or grease permeating the surface, allowing the keytops to be wiped clean easily using just a damp cloth.
KAWAI Let-off Simulation
As one of the most authentic digital piano keyboard actions in its class, Responsive Hammer II even reproduces the ‘let-off’ characteristic of acoustic piano actions.

This subtle ‘notch’ sensation can be felt when playing the keys of a grand piano very gently, and may be used by experienced pianists to aid control when playing pianissimo passages.

Kawai CP3 Uses The Responsive Hammer (RHII) Graded-Hammer Piano Action
The Touch of a Grand Piano: Responsive Hammer II keyboard action: The CP3’s Responsive Hammer II keyboard action recreates the supreme touch of an acoustic grand piano, with its realistic movement and rigid, springless design providing a smooth and natural piano playing experience.

The instrument’s triple-sensor key detection system enhances responsiveness and accuracy, while structural reinforcements throughout the action assembly help to minimize noise and key wobble during staccato and fortissimo passages.

As one of the world’s premier builders of acoustic pianos, Kawai has long understood the importance of an instrument’s touch, or “feel”, to the player. Without a keyboard action that responds perfectly to an artist’s commands, a piano would not accurately create the sound that the artist is seeking.
