TAPERED SOUNDBOARD MADE OF SOLID SPRUCE

The soundboard is the heart of a piano. Its purpose is to transform the vibrations of the piano’s strings into a rich, resounding tone. Kawai uses only straightgrained, quartersawn solid spruce for K Series soundboards. Each soundboard is strategically tapered to maximize its tone producing capability. Only those that meet or exceed our demanding quality standards are selected for use in our professional upright pianos.

ELEMENTS OF EXCEPTIONAL TONE
The Kawai K-800 Professional Upright Piano uses premium Mahogany Molding, Double Felted, “Royal George” Piano Hammer Felt for the hammers. “Royal George” Hammer Felt is utilized by the highest quality grand pianos played in major concert halls around the world. The felt is top-quality wool formed and managed under strict quality control, and the process has been highly evaluated for over 100 years. Kawai K-500 through Kawai K-200 Professional Upright Pianos utilize Mahogany Molding, Double Felted Hammers. Mahogany wood core and T-stapled, double felted hammers. Mahogany hammer mouldings are lightweight and extremely responsive. Found on only the finest pianos, mahogany is used for the hammer mouldings on the entire line of K Series Professional Upright Pianos. All K Series hammers are T-Stapled to preserve hammer shape and fitted with an added interior layer of underfelt to support the creation of exceptional tone.
RICHNESS OF TONE IS THE HALLMARK OF KAWAI PIANOS
All Kawai Professional Upright Pianos are constructed with full-length ribs. These ribs help sound wave patterns energize the soundboard as a whole. All ribs on Kawai K Uprights are notched and continue into the inner rim to achieve an ideal balance of tone. This synergy of structure produces a powerful, well-rounded richness of tone that is the hallmark of Kawai pianos.
KAWAI SOUNDBOARDS EXCEED DEMANDING RESONANCE STANDARDS
The soundboard is the heart of a piano's tone. Kawai uses only straight-grained, quarter-sawn solid spruce for K Series soundboards. Each one is strategically tapered to provide the proper degree of resonant movement in each region. Only soundboards that exceed our demanding resonance standards are selected for use in the K Series upright pianos.
BEAUTIFUL SINGING QUALITY OF THE K-800 SERIES GRAND PIANOS
Duplex Scale is available on the K-800 and K-500. Dual Duplex Scaling is an important design element that helps to make possible the beautiful singing quality of the upright piano. Duplex Scaling allows the extreme ends of the piano’s strings to vibrate and produce harmonics that enhance tone. The K-800 Dual Duplex design combines a front duplex region (between the tuning pins and agraffes) with a similar rear duplex region (between the aliquot system and the bridge) to add a double measure of harmonic richness, brilliance, complexity and sustain to the piano’s tone. The K-500 Duplex Scale uses only the front duplex region.
MAXIMUM STRENGTH AND OPTIMAL TRANSFER OF SOUND ENERGY

The bridge performs the vital task of transferring the vibrations of the strings to the soundboard. K Series bass  and treble bridges are made of the highest quality hard maple for maximum strength and optimal transfer of sound energy. Bridges are individually notched for a clear, powerful tone quality. Height is carefully set and matched to the iron plate for correct string pressure and optimal tonal transfer.

INCREASED TONAL POWER AND SUSTAIN
Energy Reflecting Contour Bars reshape the speaking area of the soundboard to resemble the contour of a grand piano soundboard while reflecting sound energy back into the center for increased tonal power and sustain.
