SHIGERU KAWAI KONSEI KATAGI INNER RIM

FROM INITIAL DESIGN, TO THE SELECTION OF THE FINEST MATERIALS,
EACH SHIGERU PIANO IS A WORK OF UNCOMPROMISING CRAFTSMANSHIP.

Hybrid Inner Rim
(Konsei Katagi Rim)

The exclusive Konsei Katagi rim uses a blend of distinctive hardwoods to achieve an ideal balance of tone. For the inner rim, small-pored hardwoods that provide superior brightness and projection are inter-laminated with dense, large-pored hardwoods offering warmth and fullness. This synergy of structurally divergent hardwoods produces a powerful, well-rounded richness of tone that is the hallmark of the Shigeru piano.

KIGARASHI PREMIUM AGED SOUNDBOARD

THE PASSION FOR EXCELLENCE DWELLS DEEPLY WITHIN
THE HEART OF EVERY SHIGERU KAWAI PIANO

Shigeru Kawai EX Concert Grand Piano quantities are limited because the soundboards inside are made of rare 200-year-old Ezo spruce trees from the northern island of Hokkaido. The soundboards are aged for five years, compared with one year of aging for an ordinary piano soundboard. The custom-tapered soundboard in a Shigeru piano is made exclusively from the finest spruce, aged by the traditional kigarashi process that uses only the forces of time and nature to allow the wood to attain a state of natural balance. It is this lengthy and painstaking process that gives Shigeru pianos their uniquely rich tonal quality.

HAND WOUND TEMAKI BASS STRINGS

THE LOVE OF MUSIC-MAKING RUNS DEEP IN SHIGERU KAWAI ARTISANS.

In the Japanese language, the word temaki literally means “hand wound.” In the unhurried temaki process, the artisan patiently directs the winding of each individual bass string by hand for absolute precision and tension to ensure rich character and superb depth of tone.

SHIKO SEION HAMMERS

IT IS A VISCERAL SENSE OF CALLING, BORN FROM THEIR OWN PASSIONATE JOURNEY
IN THE ART FORM, THAT INSPIRES THIS UNIQUE QUEST FOR MASTERY.

Shiko Seion hammers, which take their name from the Japanese words for “ultimate voicing”, are the exclusive province of our Master Piano Artisans who oversee their formation from beginning to end. Every hammer is meticulously hand-pressed without the application of heat and carefully voiced without artificial hardeners to ensure outstanding dynamic response and expression.

SHIGERU KAWAI LIMITED EDITION

THE MUSICIAN'S CHOICE, UNPARALLELED LEGACY.
UNSURPASSED CRAFTSMANSHIP. UNRIVALED ADVANCEMENT.

A Shigeru piano is much more than the intelligent application of material, labor and design. It is an art form born not from the head, but from the heart. Thus, the craftsman does far more than simply “build” it—he brings it to life. The sensitive nurturing of every part, every joint, every subtle nuance vests each piano with an intangible quality—a soul—that lives on from generation to generation. And those who own a Shigeru piano know that they possess not merely an instrument, but a partner in the musical pursuit of dreams.

SHIGERU KAWAI ANECHOIC CHAMBER

EACH SHIGERU KAWAI PIANO IS A DISTINCTIVE WORK OF UNBOUNDED
POTENTIAL – READY TO DISCOVER ITS TRUE AND LASTING VOICE.

Our anechoic chamber enables the comprehensive analysis of pure tone. Advanced materials enhance stability and consistency of touch. Digital design tools optimize the construction and performance of every component part.

SHIGERU KAWAI THE PREMIER PIANO OF THE WORLD

OVER ONE HUNDRED YEARS AGO, IN A HUMBLE WORKSHOP IN JAPAN,
KOICHI KAWAI EMBARKED UPON A JOURNEY – A SPIRITUAL QUEST TO DESIGN
AND BUILD A PIANO THAT WOULD ONE DAY BE CALLED “THE FINEST”.

A generation later, this dream burned intensely in the heart of Shigeru Kawai. To Shigeru Kawai, the dream represented not just his origins, but his destiny – an unrelenting force that would launch a lifetime of devotion in the pursuit of  perfection. In the Shigeru Kawai piano, you will see not just his labor and his love – but his life.

The Dream. The Honor. The Passion. The Inspiration. The Advancement.

Kawai has provided instruments for official selection in the Hamamatsu International Piano Competition since the inaugural event was held in 1991, with top prize winner Victor Liadov selecting the EX concert grand piano at the 2nd competition held in 1994. A record 449 pianists from around the world applied to compete at this year’s 9th competition, with 72 participants selected to perform. Following three stages of qualifying, the final round was contested by 6 participants, with the first prize awarded to Italian pianist Alexander Gadjiev, who selected the Shigeru Kawai SK-EX full concert grand piano throughout the competition. Speaking after the final, Mr Gadjiev, who also received the competition’s Audience award, explained that he had selected the SK-EX for its supremely colorful tone, allowing a great range of musical expression to be achieved.

Third place prize winner Alexei Melnikov (Russia), Fourth place prize winner and Chamber Music award winner Florian Mitrea (Romania), and Diploma of Outstanding Merit award winner Miura Kenji (Japan) also selected the Shigeru Kawai SK-EX throughout each round of the competition.

As one of three piano manufacturers’ instruments available for official selection, the Shigeru Kawai SK-EX proved extremely popular among contestants throughout the competition. In the first round, 24 of the 72 participants selected Kawai, followed by 11 out of 24 contestants in the second round. Of the remaining 12 participants that reached the third round, 7 pianists selected Kawai, while the final was contested by 6 individuals, 3 of whom performed using the SK-EX.

About the Shigeru Kawai SK-EX full concert grand piano

Unveiled in 2001 as the flagship instrument of the Shigeru Kawai line, the SK-EX concert grand piano is hand-crafted in limited numbers following a unique ‘prototyping’ creation process. In order to achieve the supreme range of expression required in a concert piano, each instrument utilizes a variety of carefully selected materials, with premium aged spruce soundboards. Shigeru Kawai instruments adopt the advanced Millennium III keyboard action, featuring extended wooden keys and advanced ABS Carbon action parts, providing superior speed and responsiveness than conventional wooden action parts, allowing pianists to express a greater range of feeling and emotion in their performance.

Shigeru Kawai Pianos

Dream. Honor. Passion. Soul. The life of Shigeru Kawai

The technology that supports the sounds produced by the Shigeru Kawai are created by the craftsman who have dedicated their lives to building the world’s finest pianos. Every single step, each intricately detailed design, is performed without urgency—as our craftsmen draw upon their years of experience to achieve their relentless pursuit of perfection. It’s this good, old-fashioned care and great individual pride that enables our pianos to attract the greatest musicians from around the world.

In the Shigeru Kawai Research and Development Laboratory in Japan, our renowned Master Piano Artisans patiently craft one of the world’s finest musical instruments—the EX Concert Grand Piano. Combining our time-tested methods of origin with today's most sophisticated piano design tools each EX Concert Piano is conceived as a “next step” in the evolving art of the piano. The scarcity of materials used and the painstaking attention devoted to each EX Concert Piano make these instruments rare indeed. Fewer than twenty are crafted each year for all the world. But to truly understand the EX is to play it. Only then, in its transcendent tone and incomparable touch, will you fully sense the passion, the devotion... the spirit of Kawai.
The Artisans... The Shigeru Kawai piano is perfected by an elite brand of artisan craftsman. Each of Shigeru Kawai's twenty Master Piano artisans is at the pinnacle of his profession. With remarkable skills proven in the worlds' finest concert halls and international piano competitions, each artisan brings a seasoned wealth of experience and passion to his craft. Upon completion of a finished work, the craftsman adds his name to the piano’s rich pedigree as a symbol of devotion and pride.
Skillfully Handcrafted… The Shigeru Kawai piano is born of the same advanced origins that distinguish every Shigeru Kawai creation. Yet, the skilled application of detailed handwork at every level of the crafting process – often as much as five times more than other pianos – set the Shigeru piano apart in a place all its own.
Japanese “Ezo” Spruce… The show-shrouded mountains of Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island, are home to the rare Ezo Spruce. The extreme climate and lofty altitude of Hokkaido produce a wood that is prized for its close, even grain. Available in strictly limited quantities, Ezo Spruce provides exceptional energy transmission and tonal projection.
Kigarashi Premium-Aged Soundboards... In the language of wood, "kigarashi" means "finding balance through time and nature, “ In the kigarashi process, solid Ezo spruce soundboards are allowed to season naturally. The process is arduous and requires much patience. The result is a supremely rich tonal quality that is unsurpassed. Only soundboards that can endure the demanding kigarashi process are deemed worthy of the Shigeru piano.
The Most Precise Piano Action in the World… More than three decades of research and development have resulted in the most respected piano action available today. The “Millennium III Action” with ABS-Carbon™ stands alone in providing the finest combination of strength, stability, precision and reliability.
Exclusive “Shiko Seion” Hammers… “Shiko Seion” is translated “the highest level of voicing.” Shiko Seion hammers are made and voiced entirely by our Master Piano Artisans with a select blend of New Zealand and Australian long-fiber wool. They are hand-pressed, reinforced and formed without artificial hardeners to deliver unmatched dynamics and expression for the artist.
Temaki Bass Strings… “Temaki” literally means “hand-rolled.” In the unhurried Temaki process, the artisan patiently directs the winding of each bass string by hand for absolute precision and tension, which ensures exquisite tonal depth.
Concert Style, Dual-Pivot Damper Pedal… The Dual-Pivot design offers the player unparalleled control and responsiveness in proportional pedaling.
A Rare Treasure… Fewer than one percent of all Kawai instruments will ever bear the name Shigeru. The rigorous degree of handwork and use of specially chosen materials keeps these instruments rare in both character and quantity. Each Shigeru piano is a Limited Edition treasure, selectively numbered for North America by year of creation.
