THE BEAUTY OF THE SHIGERU KAWAI

Unsurpassed Craftsmanship.

Qualities That Make a Shigeru Kawai The Premier Piano Of Japan.

Origin and Finish is Beauty

The standards are extremely high and the unsurpassed Shigeru Kawai piano finish is paramount. Fewer than 20 of Shigeru Kawai piano cases are crafted and prepared each year for the entire world. Clear or solid high gloss black polyester finishes on the Shigeru Kawai piano magnifies the wood grain and bring to life the finished surface.

Polyester is the most recent material to be used on fine pianos. It is a product of modern chemical technology that provides the highest degree of beauty and protection available. Polyester is a very stable product and weather changes have no effect on its size. Kawai utilizes a special resin formula to create a material that provides a stable surface for the polyester application. This resin is applied directly to the wood and makes the wood under the finish virtually impervious to atmospheric changes. The integrity of the polyester finish is not subjected to changes that could otherwise take place in the wood beneath the finish. Virtually indestructible, polyester protects against sun, heat, spilled liquids and most other substances that tend to destroy a piano’s finish. It is about ten times thicker and up to seven times harder than lacquer. The extra thickness and strength of polyester not only beautifies and protects the wood from scratches, but also seals the wood to protect it from humidity fluctuation.

The Shigeru Kawai musical instrument's high gloss polyester piano finish displays a stunning piece of furniture for you to enjoy now and from generation to generation.

Kawai Piano Tradition

Lacquer Has Played An Important Part In Japanese Culture For More Than Two Thousand Years As A Protective, Decorative Finish. Each Kawai satin finish piano case is recurrently hand stained, lacquered and then hand-rubbed through many repeated processes producing a beautiful satin finish, just as fine piano finishes have skillfully been prepared for over a hundred years.

The Kawai satin piano case, hand rubbed finishing method, is a long established specialty profession that requires years of experience. It is a tremendous amount of labor, requiring meticulous hours of work for months requiring patience repeatedly building processes of layers of Kawai distinctive stain textures, sanding, filler, sealer, and final coats.

A Kawai piano cabinet is finished taking sound properties in mind as well as for remarkable appearance. The cabinet is sanded so stain is absorbed properly, wood is bleached to equalize appearance of the veneer, pre-staining and staining are done next, wood fillers are added, and a first coat of sealer or lacquer is applied. The surface is sanded again, special glazes for antiquing or other effects are added followed by additional coats of lacquer, sanding is done again, special trims are added, and additional final coats of lacquer are used. The cabinet is dried for an extensive period of time before it is hand-rubbed to its final piano finish. This process is known to take months of a year to accomplish.
